Module 5: Radicalization theories

The module aims to provide a detailed description of the three main models of radicalization, analyzing their characteristics, dynamics, and implications for the prevention and counteraction of the phenomenon

Learning Objectives

Describe the three models of radicalization (Moghaddam, Sabic, Kruglanski), identifying their assumptions, stages, and key concepts.

Critically compare the models, making explicit their convergences, divergences and strengths/limitations, and distinguishing between cognitive and behavioral radicalization.

Analyze the psychological, social, and structural dynamics of radicalization processes and the interactions between individual, group, and context.

Apply the models to case studies (e.g., climate activism) to formulate interpretive hypotheses and possible outcome trajectories.

Design multi-level prevention strategies (macro/meso/micro), justifying the choices in light of the theories examined.
